Who is Ravel...?
Hello...
well just got back from SNYO rehearsal and i must say that the orchestra is getting better. i learned quite alot today. but first, I don't think this orchestra knows who is Ravel and the magic he puts in his music. if we were to listen to ravel piano pieces...hmmm..it is simply magical. so much weightlessness and life yet the gentleness of a soft brush stroke. that is what i picture Ravel as in his music. well today we played Ravel as if it was a technically demanding ppiece. but i feel that we need to just listen and go with the flow...literally. one thing that Mr John Farrar said, i felt was very important and that many musician and orchestra take for granted. "if a running passage has been pain stakingly written out note for note, then why must you rush throught them and sacrifice the notes. if at all Ravel wanted it fast he would have just written a glissando." i felt that is so true. we faile to get the meaning of each note and its importance. especially inn the case of Ravel.
Brahms today was good but can be better. it was nice and emo hee hee. the cellos were cool i would say. another importnat thing that the conductor said was"Brahms is a craftsmen" it is a simple four word phrase but to me full of meaning. i think again we fail to understand music and its purpose in our lifes as musicians. sigh. well htis is a learning journey...i'll just have to learn as much as possible along the way.
yup thats al for now.
